Black Friar (Holy Church Mendicant)

The Black Friars are known throughout Europa, and feared by many. They are most famous for their relentless--many would say ruthless--pursuit of black magic (malefictum ), heresy, hidden evil and other potential threats to the Holy Church. However, this is not the limit of their activities. Black Friars travel the known world as missionaries, explorers and diplomats. They are renowned theologians and philosophers, holding “chairs” at many universities. Like their fellow friars some also perform traditional mendicant activities of working with the poor and outcast, always keeping a sharp eye open for heretical acts and ideas.
Only humans, and with the rare exception, only Holy Church crusaders and clerics are capable of joining the order, and only if they show both the proper aptitude and unbending faith. The Black Friars retains the clerics’ skill with divine magic and turning undead. They are experts at finding things out, in a wide range of contexts.
As Holy Church mendicants, male Black Friars are associated with a priory, a sort of monastery, but are encouraged to travel, spreading and enforcing the holy word. Women join a related order of nuns, and live in convents. The Black Friars possessions nominally belong to the order, but in practice the friar can keep them as long as they give 10% of their income to the order, from which they can in turn expect a commensurate amount of support. They cannot marry, and in general must maintain a life that is oriented to the spiritual, not the worldly. They must normally wear their well known black cassock. Black friars are subordinate to higher ranking friars, and may be called on to perform certain tasks. Most of the time however they will be given a fair amount of autonomy if they are successful in furthering the interests of the Holy Church, as informed by the teachings of the order, of course.

Class Features
All the following are class features of the black friar prestige class.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Black Friars do not gain any additional weapon or armor proficiencies.

Insightful Question: The Friar adds one point of their wisdom bonus per Friar level to Gather Information and Intimidate checks. They may also add it to Sense Motive checks, in addition to the normal Wisdom modifier. For example, a 2nd level friar with a 16 wisdom would receive a +2 on these checks, at 3rd level or higher +3.

Scholar: The Friar adds one point of their wisdom bonus per friar level to Knowledge checks.

Cleric Spells per Day and Domain Abilities: At 2nd level and each level thereafter, if the friar can cast cleric spells their caster level and spells per day increase as if their cleric level increased by one. Their cleric level is also treated as one higher with respect to any level dependent domain abilities.

Turn Undead: A friar who can turn undead adds their friar level - 1 to their cleric level when making a turning check.

Domain: At 2nd level the friar, if they can cast cleric spells, gains the Truth domain. They gain the special ability from the domain, and can prepare their domain spells from it.

Domain Spells: Starting at 2nd level a friar that can cast cleric spells, can prepare and cast a 1st level and 2nd level domain spell each day. At 3rd level he can prepare an additional 3rd and 4th level domain spells. At each additional level can they prepare and cast a second domain spell of a higher level, as indicated on the above table. They only gain an additional domain spell if they can cast spells of that level.
